Removing algae from hull

My boat's has a coating of dried white algae on the hull. The boat was kept in a lake for one season and did not have anti-fouling paint. So its pretty coated, along with the drive. First, how do I get it off? Cleaners, Chemicals, old fashioned elbow grease?

Second, the paint on the bottom looks rough, should be redone. I plan on keeping the boat out of the water and trailering to the lake. Should I have the anti-fouling paint applied or just some fresh paint over the gel-coat? Or is the bottom paint purely cosmetic and I could leave it?

Last, any reason I should be concerned that the paint is worn? This boat has been kept in the water in season. Its a 2001. No sign of blistering that I could tell. Not beat up in any way.

Thanks.

It may be calcium build up. Spot test using CLR. I have bottom paint so it never got on the hull, but my outdrive was always covered with calcium after each season.

You may want to put it in the water for a day or so (if possible). That will soften the algea up and you can get it off with a low pressure spray and some scrubbing.

I usually scrub my boat right after I pull it out for the season, so the stuff does not have a chance to dry on solid. It is a lot easier to get off while it is still water saturated.
