Need help with a transom problem

my transom is about 2 1/2 inches thick and much to thick for the size engine i want to use and since i am no boat builder i am wondering how easy it is to cut a chuck out of the transom to make an engine mounting area about 1 inch thick so thats 1 1/2 inches to be cut out can anyone help me figure this out?
