I bought a zoom dinghy last year and have sailed it a few times in southport marine lake, windermere and ullswater in the lake district. Great fun. If you have any information about them i would be greatful. I bought mine from ebay and got no information with it.

Hi Kev

I'm not too sure how I add a picture to this thread but i'm more than happy to email a picture if you want to let me have your address.

The logo on my main sail is also 2 interlocking rings so it sounds like we have the same class of boat or at least sail anyway!

My sail number is 1051 what is yours?

One of the best sailing dinghies I have ever had both single handed with mainsail (mast stepped forward) and with crew on a trapeze with two sails and mast stepped back. There are a number of improvemntsyou can make yourself but though more stable than a Laser 2 it is just as much fun. Needs a tapered mast (its standard mast is too heavy) and a mast or sail float collar or ball to stop it going completely upside down if it capsizes else it has no weak points or vices, why ever did they stop making them ? Other weak point is the floor supports in some of them. If anyone has one gor sale let me know !

Hi if anyone has any pictures of their zoom dinghy or information relating to when and where they were made please email:

zoomdinghies@gmail.com

I own one myself and have just renovated it and would welcome any background on what appears to be a completely unknown boat.

Earlier ones were by Fletcher who are better known for speedboats and later ones were by Anglo Marine of Clacton who made the Wanderer dinghy. I believe the design was Italian and that they were also made in Holland

Aren't they made by Zodiac? I here that they are a good value. I currently own a inflatable Boat SD 290 10ft model. The boat is manufactured by a company called http://www.boatstogo.com Saturn. I love it. I have owned plenty of inflatables over the years as my principal meas of fishing and boating. My Sd 330 is the best value that I've found so far. The only difference between this boat and an achillies is the price.

I bought a Zoom a few weeks ago from a guy at Tiverton. Polished up well, a few small things to replace and have had some great outings. Sail no is 56 on the sail and 1129 on the sailbag (both with inter-locking ring logo), colour given as Sahara on the bag - white/yellow/orange. Seems pretty solidly made i.e a bit heavy but tough. Mast is a one piece tapered, foils are wood.

Cleating mainsheet block is a bit of a hazard in stronger winds (difficult to disengage when sitting out well aft) so may try a ratchet block. Mostly sailing two up, haven't used the trapeze yet or tried it single handed with the mast stepped forward. But good in light winds one up with both sails.

One thing I found useful to add is a flotation ball at the top of the mast or floats stitched into the top of the sail as else if they capsize my experience was that they tend to go completely over (mast down) and difficult to get up again but otherwise excellent. The tapered mast is useful also as the early ones had a standard and heavy non tapered mast which I replaced for the same reason.

I had a small ball supplied with the boat, only 3 inch or so dia at the mast head and did nothing when we capsized. Went upside down but easily righted, although first attempt went straight back over and then easily righted. Key was to have the crew holding on to the bow to help keep it head to wind.

Will try bigger balls !!

I have a Zoom I sail on the stour. It sails brilliantly with twin sails but in Unarig I find it tends to spin head to wind in a big blow- how do I stop this?

I have a second mast step position further forward on the foredeck. This brings the centre of effort forwards when unarigged. But need to sdd some stiffening under the foredeck to support it.

I have just bought what appears to be a Zoom - number 1031. Interlinked circles on the two tone blue and white sails. Needs a lot of TLC - looks as though its been painted with a yard broom. The gunwhales and the hull seem very thin and bow when any weight is put on them - should I consider strengthening with some extra GRP? Seller told me that the mainsail sheet is secured aft but it looks to me as though it should be midships Any help/advice/tips most welcome.

The main sheet should have a fixed attachment to the boom aft and then leads down to a block that is itself on a rope traveller which runs across the aft deck ie behind the helmsman. It then leads back up to the boom then along the underside of the boom to the centre and then down to a ratchet block fixed to the floor (at the point where the floor is stepped) and leads off that block to the helmsman. The weak points in the hull appear to be on the early boats built by Fletcher Marine on the floor supports which produce considerable flexing and then some cracking in the aft floor though dependant upon the weight of the helmsman. I am not sure if this was rectified in the later boats built by Anglo Marine The mast supplied with the boats was not tapered and it is much easier to right these boats after a capsize with a lighter tapered mast.

Is that your nice looking red one on e-bay ? Don't reckon the mainsheet is rigged in the best way (i.e. by aft traveller) but maybe you like it that way /

Yes! Main is rigged for central control. It was very windy the day I took the photos so had to leave it very loose or the boat kept moving.
