My cousin and I have recently aquired a new(to us) sailing dinghy. We were hoping to sail it during the half term holidays which start next week, the only problem is that I can't seem to find out what type of dinghy it is. I have reasearched on the internet but can't find anything on this dinghy. It looks as though we may not be heavy enough to keep it upright as we are only 12 and 15 years old but I would appreciate any help. There is no manufacturers plate on the dinghy at all. I would guess it is around 15 ft long, although i could easily be wrong, it is of plywood construction with an aluminium mast, a trapeze and looks to be quite racy, it is fractionally rigged with red sails with the logo on the sails almost identical to that of a mirror dinghy. The only difference being that on the top of the M there are two burgee shaped triangles. So i would have thought that these two dinghies are related in some way, however it is definetely not a mirror. Any information would be greatly appreciated as we would really like to know. Thank You :-)

sounds like a Mirror 14, which had a version with bigger white sails which was then called a Marauder. I used to own #683...fabulous fun.

I had one last year for about 6 months before it fell to peices, the front tank had about 3 gallons of water trapped inside and the rot just went to far. Any way a brilliant litle boat wish I could find another.
I have all the ancillaries mast, centre plate etc.
There is one at Chew Valley Lake SC, she has a minor hole near the bow but apart from that looks good

Thanks for your reply.

Do you have any contact details for the other boat? Also how much of the rigging did you keep? I don't suppose you had a good road trailer and cover? mine is not the right one for the boat...

Really looking for the trap, kite and genoa...

H.

I have aproached the owner of the other boat but he intends to repair he himself, but I ask him occasionally, you never know. He thinks that there is a mould for GRP hull some where in the west country. We both beleave that it would make an ideal youth trainer.
I have a mast complete with trap gear, centre board, tiller rudder and stock, centre main tube, and spinny + a few odds and sods.

As for a genoa GP14, Wayfarer and flying fifteens have similar size but double check, especially if you intend to race

I have just purchased Marauder dinghy sail number 353. She is completely sound and seems to have had little use. Currently stripping bad paint job done last year and looking forward to learning to sail again.
Would be delighted to hear from anyone with more technical info and whether or not there is an owners club.

Hi the class association went long ago and as far as I'm aware there is no class racing any where in the UK. I do have some information on the class along with a couple of class magazines and rigging guides I could email to you.

I'm always on the look out for more Maruader information if any one can help

I also have rudder and tiller assembly, centre plate, mast with all the rigging and a suit of Mirror 14 sails (Maruader predessesor)

I owned n.o 56 for about 6 years in the late 70's and early 80's it was a fantastic boat. I upgraded it from a Mirror 14 to marauder spec which basically meant the addition of a spinnaker chute and an overlapping genoa

Its a real shame that the class seems to have disappeared.

I was just trying to find out its PY number which I recall was 109 using the old system, there seems to be no current number

Hi
I don't know if it was the same on all Maruaders/Mirror 14s but on my 14 there was not the usual through bolt, probably because of the crew deck being in the way. There were two L shaped SS plates with pins. The pins loacated in a hole at the front of the centre board, forming the pivot. The whole assembly was then put into the centre box from below and the two returns on the SS plates were screwed the the hull.
Quite a neat solution with no holes through the centre box, I have not seen this type of system on any other boat
I'll try and find the SSplates and put them with the centre board for some photos, when I get chance???

Hi,
I own a Mirror 14 which I built from a kit and sailed many years ago. It was then "forgotten" about when I bought a sadler 26. I am beginning to restore her, by replacing the decks etc. However, when I looked at the state of my old sails and cover I realised that I would need new ones. So if anyone does have a set of mirror 14 sails and a cover for sale, or knows where I could find some please contact me. My e-mail: richard.angus1@btinternet.com.
Thankyou,
Richard.

The Mirror 14/Marauder was designed by Peter Milne who also designed the Fireball. My father owned No 218 in Australia. I crewed for him to win the inaugural Australian Championship in 1973. This was the first and last Australian Championship. I still have the Blockey Cup (Dlockeys were the local franchisee for the Mirror kits) and my father died as undefeated Australian champion.

The Mirror Newspaper returned the copyright to Peter Milne when they stopped selling the boats. I understand that no wooden mirror 14/ marauders have been built since the 1980's the last one number1001was built in 1980 and a few with glass fibre hulls with wooden decks etc. were built in the following few years.

There were no plans for the Mirror14 only a set of pictures and an instruction book with information on how to put together the kit of numbered parts. The kits. were made by Bell Woodworking the same firm that also produced the Mirror10 Miracle and Mirror16. They stopped trading in the 1980s. A number of boats were built by Dennis Trott approx. six and later some were made from a mould which was purchased by The Marauder Association these being composite ones with plywood decks etc..and mainly built by members of The Marauder Association. I understand the Association ceased some time ago.

Hi, The spinnaker pole length is 2180mm. The actual wording of the measurement rule is as follows ' Rule 9b The distance from the outboard end of the spinnaker boom ........ to the closest part of the mast shall be a maximum of 2180mm'. As to the spinnaker itself around the time Carolynn and I started sailing Marauders(Mirror 14's) back in 1986, the Fireball/470 size spinnaker rules were adopted by the Association and so anyone looking for a spinnaker for the Marauder only need to get one of these. Nick Smith, Marauder 1005.

Like the last post from Nick Smith I too have stacks of Marauder/Mirror 14 material. I also write for Dinghy Sailing Magazine and featured the boat a few years back in a series I ran called 'The Lost Classes'.

If there is sufficient interest, I could post up a load of the information on my website (bearfacemedia.co.uk) or if there are specific questions then I may be able to help. For now, I can confirm that the mould referred to in an earlier email, was destroyed a few years back. The Class Association died in the mid 1990s which is a shame as this was at one time one of the fastest growing classes - it was a damn good boat. I keep hearing rumours of people wanting to start the boat back up and I'd be more than happy to provide any help with anyone wanting to do this -it is not a difficult boat to build in ply.

Good luck...

Wow I've actually found a site where people are talking about this boat. I've just bought one this week, in beautiful condition, just needs a couple of really small jobs doing, and will probably strip and varnish the top ready for the grand launch, but it's been really well looked after by an enthusiast. Came with two sets of sails the original red ones and the larger white ones fully kitted out with everything, covers, trailer, spinnaker, trapeze, even the how to built book, even though it was built by a company, Bells is it, might be wrong. One hell of a boat. Goes in the water in a couple of weeks or as soon as I've got the time, dying and I MEAN dying to sail it. I've only managed to find about 10 photos on the net, and most of them are in b&w. Anyone know how much these boats are worth (not as I'm planning to sell it) and how many are actually still around in good condition, just really interested in what I've bought. I used to have a mirror 10, but apart from being a great learners boat, I didn't really like it, always felt like I was sailing a something that looked like a wheelbarrow, but this is really really nice, if anyone would like any photos to help them with there own projects please email me kether@hotmail.co.uk

A good starting point for more information is over on the CVRDA website (www.cvrda.org) - this is THE place for information on what is known as the 'lost classes'.

I have a whole folder full of details of various bits of information .

As far as I know, I organised the last Nationals that the Class held at Netley, it was good to see 'amost' double figures once again - for the class that was once Europes fastest growing 2 person dinghy class.

If you've not yet had the chance to sail a Marauder/m14 and know of one, then despite being a little bit 'out on your own', it is well worth giving it a go. These days I work as a yachting journalist (in Dinghy Sailing Magazine) so I get to sail nearly every boat that comes along- so I have plenty to compare with.

The Marauder is a lovely boat to sail, with enough power and that nice sharp entry to power upwind, then the lovely flat aft sections that are pure Peter Milne giving an exciting blast downwind. If the boat is good, why did it fail? A complex situation and may need a lot more space than is here. All I will say is that the situation is a shame, for if any boat deserved to succeed on it's merits then it was the M14.

I've already had emails from some ex-Marauder owners and other 'interested' parties so if there is real interest, will put up a new section of the website dedicated to the class - I can then put a load of the info up there.

Let me know if you're interested...

Dougal

Hi, I am not sure if this is really the right forum to do this but I actually have one of these for sale. It has been re-built and just needs finishing off. Basically the woodwork is complete, the hull repaired and just needs the resin finish. It has loads of bits with it, sails, mast (may need slight repairs) and a spinnakar I believe, as well as loads of scanned manuals for repair etc. Not sure if anyone would be intereted. My e-mail is walker@gajls.wanadoo.co.uk and I live near Bath in Wiltshire. Thanks, Gary

I have a mirror14/marauder but it is badly damaged.
I've been advised that it's only fit for matches but am reluctant to scrap it. However I haven't any drawings or templates for the bow end which has rotted
Can you advise if its possible to get any drawings or templates for the panels that make up the marauder hull front section
thanks

ans,

best is to take a couple of pics and load them up - how badly damaged is a very 'subjective' comment. The problem with the M14 was that the bow pulled the whole thing into the correct shape... so how you repair the hull will be crucial

I am really trying to track down ever single M14 / Marauder.

If you could be really kind - drop me an e-mail to

Howard_h_miller@yahoo.com

Really interested in the sail number, condition ( if it is dead, then what year?) and rough location. If you are ok to send pictures that would be great!!! Of the boat that is....

Also if you have any info or parts left please let me know.

Hi
For your records, Marauder 96 was scrapped about 8-9 years ago, marauder 763 was sold to a club member 3 years ago who has subsequently left Sutton Bingham Sailing club, Marauder 832 one of the Trott built marauders is still owned by me and is in need of a lick of paint and varnish.

Tried in the past to link up with the CVRD association but the Marauder is outside the design criteria ie designed in 1968 so not eleigable under CVRD rules

wow...ian Freemans old boat, that is a rocket ship! That has to be one of the fastest Marauders, at the time I'd say that only the one off composite boat that Carolynn and Nick Smith sailed had the legs on it.

You've a rare beast as Dennis Trott didn't build many boats, two ot destroyed that I know of, one went to Sutton Bingham, after that, no one knows.

Howard, more for your records.

Out of the two new boats that we made with Ian Ridge, one was over in Ireland at Donagahee, the other, the boat owned by ex Class Sec John Marston, (1007?) was destroyed in a storm. I've plenty of pics of that courtesy of nessa, will upload them soon

Thanks to all those who have sent me material. I have now started work over on the bearfacemedia website (www.bearfacemedia.co.uk) on the Mirror 14 / Marauder Story. This will by necessity a work in progress as there is a lot more information out there, so if you have it and are willing to share, please send it in.

As a further aside to the story, I recently had conversations with a builder interested in examining the possibility of restarting building this wonderful boat.

I have boat number 703 in good condition following a recent overhaul. I have a set of original red sails including spinnaker and pole in very good condition (crisp) I also have a spare mast and boom. I have decided that after sailing it all weekend at Bala Lake I am not the sailor for this boat. The boat is awesome but I am not. The boat is fitted withbrand new trapeze gear for the more adventurous. It comes with an old road trailer which is serving as a launch trolley!
If anyone out there would like to contact me by email at bobtheblindman@btconnect.com and make me an offer for this awesome bot then please do. The boat is at Bala Lake at the moment but normally resides in Shropshire

I had one as well excellent fun the m14 became the marauder when a gonoa replaced the jib and White sails were allowed. I sailed mine from about the age of 13 and even kept it until my kids were old enough to go out in it. Eventually after a long and glorious life we gave it a Viking funeral

Dave,

What an amazing co-incidence getting your mail. Yes, there IS news.... and it suggests things are going in the right direction. We've a hull builder and a very interesting rig concept.... not sure yet how the market would take to the launch/re-launch of yet another class...... it would make a great club boat but would be pitched against the RS 500 which is enjoying a very successful run positioned below the Hornet/Fireball and 470.

Hi Carolynn and Nick hope to be sailing Marauder 1005 at the CVRDA event at Baltic Wharf in Bristol Docks on the 20th November. With a bit of luck there should also be another Marauder/M14 there, so this will be a good opportunity to see the boats up close and in action. Regards Nick.

Nessa,

If you look at the ariel picture taken of my last Marauder you'll see that I'd gone for bags. The boat is quite a stable platform so it is not too bad for the crew to be in the boat whilst the kte is being dropped (and you of course being a 470er would be fine with it anyway...for more on this, read on a bit below)

Nic and Carolynn - I'm hoping to be at BW but it is unlikely that I'll be sailing as Supercrew Jon doesn't complete his shift until 6am and I do not think that crewing in a Merlin - in the restricted waters of BW - after working all night - would be a lot of fun. If I can make it though I will, it would be very good to catch up again after all this time.

Had a long and very interesting telephone call the other day regarding the building of a M14. When we were looking at new tooling for a hull, I went and saw Peter Milne who was happy with more or less whatever we wanted to do to the hull - his only stipulation was that the spray rails on the aft sections of the hull needed to remain.

So - our conversation this week was on 'what should the boat be' rather than just recreating the historical image of the 'old boat'.

We came up with a number of ideas.....move the jib tack after 8" so that the spinnaker shute could be right at the bow (like on a 505). Do away with the forward bulkhead, but continue the cockpit floor forward to the bow, much like the merlin rockets. Do away with the thwart.... and revist the low aspect rig.

So far, this is all just a paper exercise - nothing is yet in place to build a boat though I have started some calculations on the rig sizing.

The basic hull shape is though just so good - with the boat well balanced - that whatever you do, you'd not want to loose the essential 'fun' that comes with sailing the boat in light airs or strong breeze.

See you on the 20th,

Dougal

Dougal, my hull is doing nothing in the boatshed, stripped completely bare, with no centreboard case or crew floor if you need a skeleton to work with. What are the 'spray rails' ? Do I have them?

Nessa,

yes, all m14s/Marauders have them, as have Fireballs. On the aft sections of the hull, you've got two longtitudinal wedges running from up by the plate case to the transom. They are quite a 'feature' of Milne boats......

That is an interesting suggestion about using your hull.....

Nick and Carolynn sailed 1005 in the CVRDA at Baltic Wharf. The northeast wind was a good direction for Bristol Docks, but wasn't very strong, I spent a total of ten seconds on the trapeze all day. There were three races a long race which saw us sail the into the centre of Bristol and then two shorter races. Races 1 and 3 were good for us, but in race two we got buried at the start and we finished the event 3rd overall behind a Mercury and Merlin Rocket. It was nice to have a consistent breeze after the drift at Shearwater, but the Docks are not ideal for a trapeze boat. I am hoping we can sail at Roadford Lake next year and show what the Marauder is capable of. Regards Nick.

Who knows the py? Why is so little known about these boats? I'm thinking if buying one pretty much brand new, in storage shortly after it was built in 1996. What's it worth?

if you call in to the Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association forum someone will know py: cvrda.org Unfortunately they aren't worth huge amounts simply because they are now a 'lost' or doscontinued class. Boats typically sell on ebay from anywhere between £250 to £450 depending on condition and what's included.

Thank you for your reply. This is what I know about it:

Foam sandwich hull, sapele mahogony decks, super spar mask, boom and spinaker pole, ball bearings throughout. Over and under covers by Banks, launching trolley 2 suites of sails (1 new by Batt).
Built by Ian Ridge on the Humble, Southhampton (1996) PY rating 106. Minimum class weight.
Garage stored from August 1999. Immaculate condition . Epoxy varnished every year by Bell. Well cared for.
Good racing record.

oh! you need to talk to Dougal (sailing journalist and researcher) about that one!. Either look for davidh on the cvrda forum, or I will send him this way. Sounds like a pretty special boat and Dougal will know it!

Also look at his Marauder section here: http://bearfacemedia.co.uk/TheMirror14Story.aspx

Okay: if the boat you are looking at dates from 1996, then it can ONLY be one boat - a grey hull composite, grp hull, wood decks. proctor mast and...Batt sails? - or Banks?
The boat was in Northern Ireland at a place called Donaghadee (spelling???).

I know the boat well and all it's history and may even have pictures of it being built!

Can you get some more pictures for me please?

And yes...I'd love to know the fate of the boat, for I was closely involved with the construction.

In Feb sometime, dear Mr Gates (aka Microsoft) are closing down the old MS website programme so the Bearfacemedia site will be no more. BUT.... I will be opening up a new website, complete with a dedicated section on the M14/Marauder - so any pictures will be really great..............

If I can help at all, please shout,

Dougal

We have just acquired a part built Mirror 14/ Marauder with a box full of bits and mast which has been hanging in a garage wrapped in plastic for about 42 years.

The condition of the wood and the build quality so far is excellent and we intend to complete the build and sail the dinghy if possible. If any body has any build instructions, parts lists or photos of completed models which we could use, or even details of where we might purchase parts and other equipment would be great and a big help.

Robert Hatherell has a copy of the build manual! He has posted on here,a nd is also on facebook, but I seem to have lost his email address. I will try and find him and point him this way. There is a chap in essex with a couple of lovely boats who might also be able to help. Whereabouts are you?

May have all sorts of help - including a copy of the building guide! Where are you (geographically) - and where near the south coast or ST Neots/Huntingdon?

Check out...www.bearfacemedia, hunt around on there and you'll find lots on the M14, including a lot on the building of a grp composite boat, I also have a contact who may have more upmarket sails and gear - but no hull......

BTW - the bearfacemedia website closes in a fortnight, but by then the new site, www.davidhenshallmedia.co.uk will be up and running - including new pages for the M14

Good luck with the build

We would be grateful to lay our hands on a copy of build instructions to start with, then we can establish exactly what is missing but we live in West Cumbria.

The family which has given us the dinghy is looking for any other equipment but at the moment we have a completed hull, part completed decks a box full of numbered wooden parts and a mast.
