So I'm a recently graduated high school student and I'll be off to college soon. I plan on joining the sailing team there, where they pretty much sail just 420's for the most part. Right now, I have a pretty good deal of experience in zumas, sunfish, etc- small single sail easy rig dinghies. I'm thinking about buying another boat though, and it would have to be used since I'm on a budget. One of the boats I've found is a 470 at a very reasonable price and in good shape. The problem is I'm not sure if this is the right boat for me; it's definitely a step or two up in complexity of rigging and sailing, but I do learn fast. Anyone with experience in a 470 who can tell me how easy/difficult it would be to run as a beginner with some experience? Obviously I wouldn't be using the spinnaker for a while, but in terms of rigging and sailing I'm looking for some advice. Also, how does one judge the condition of a 470? Is there anything specific to look for that might make or break the deal? Thanks all.
