Laser Fun sailing dinghy........

Have just bought a second hand Laser dinghy, the previous owner said she is called a Laser Fun dinghy, the word Fun is embroidered across the jib. The hull is f/glass with a self bailer, she has a main and a jib but no spinnaker, the mast is alluminium. We,ve been out in her twice when its been reasonable (another wet summer ?) and found her lively with a reasonable wind.
Is there anyone that can give me any info on this model of boat, approximate age etc. Also any advice on how to get the best out of her, she is laying at Bassenthwaite where we plan to sail her most of the time with maybe the occasional sail on Derwentwater. Any info / advice would be gratefully received. Many Thanx Robert

Your Laser Funboat is designed for the newcomer for sailing or for general fun sailing. Its an extremely simple boat to rig, maintain and sail. It can rigged very quickly by simply sliding the sail along the mast, pop the mast into the boat and the rudder on the back and your are on your way.

The Funboat's hull is made from Tecrothene A122 which provides a unique combination of strength and rigidity. It is easy to repair and highly resistant to scratching/impact damage. This means that you can sail the funboat up a beach without worry. As for maintenance, five minutes with a jet wash from time to time will do the job.

Your Funboat because of her shape has very good stability, ease of sailing and fun for all. There's lots of stability wherever passengers sit. Although most small boats have a centerboard that needs to be lowered when going afloat - and raised when coming back, the Funboat's unique shape means there's no need for a centerboard. So no hassle leaving or returning to the beach. The boom is very high which means lots of room underneath.

Actual sailing is best with a bit of a breeze.Otherwise tacking is slow in light winds - its best to gybe rather than tack. But its good fun! Enjoy sailing her! Hope this is of some help yo you.

I think that the previous respondent has confused your boat with the new Laser Fun. I've got an old Laser 2 Fun - it looks very like the Laser 2 but without a spinaker. You probably have some trapeze wires attached to the mast to help keep her flat?

Brilliant boat but quite a handful - lots of sail area for the width of the boat!

I think you'll find that much of the rig is interchangeable with Laser 2 stuff.

Enjoy it - but if you're not very heavy (less than 70kg) make sure that you practice capsize drill before you really need to!

The Laser Fun is very similar to a Laser 2 , but without the spinnaker chute of the more recent boats. There was an optional spinnaker which was the same as the laser 2 but used a bag to launch it.

The RYA quote the portmouth yardstick as 1080, although the boat should be the same as a Laser 2 with a py of 1035.

To sail your laser fast keep her dead upright and keep your weight well forward moving aft only when you're sure you're planing , using the spinnaker whenever possible. Also tie the lower mainsheet block to the middle of the bridle to stop it travelling from side to side.

Hope this proves useful.

Ian.

I have a chance to get a Laser Fun (I think the boat is a good 10-15 years old of these relatively cheaply. Would this be a good dingy for going out with my 6 Year old or would I be better with something like a GP14 or similar which might be more stable?

the laser 2 fun was a beach boat version of the laser 2 regatta. It has a reefing main roler furling jib, no trappeze and no spinacker. The hull is lively and fun.
spare parts foils are same as regatta and are availale sails go to our local sail maker.
No amount of money will make a laser fun into a regatta.
if you want a safe boat buy something like wayfarer.
laser 2 will challenge you the fun is a slightly tamed version
