Which class of boat do you sail? I would expect that there is some form of handicap system in place to even out the difference in the performance of the boats with and without spinnakers. Alternatively there my be two distinct fleets and prizes for each fleet.
It is possible for boats of completely different classes to race against each other, and then the actual time taken to complete the course is corrected using a handicap system known as the Portsmouth Yardstick. In simple terms, faster boats have a lower PY number and therefore need to complete the course in a quicker time to win on corrected time.
