Yacht registration

I'm considering the purchase of my first yacht. Most likely a Moody 42 which will be moored up in Cornwall.

I may purchase from the UK or abroad. What are the benefits and pitfalls of both these methods.

What do I need to do in terms of yacht registration? What are the advantages of yacht registration?

Thanks

All yachts must be registered. The main reason for registration is to provide proof of ownership.

Not necessarily true..... yachts don't have to be registered at all - only if a marine mortgage/loan is secured on them, then Part 1 registration is compulsary, other than that SSR is voluntary. If you are going to be sailing abroad then proof of ownership/country registration is esssential though.

But how do you prove ownership if you don't have a bill of sale - ie the yacht has been in the family for many years?
We now want to sail abroad but can't register without proof of ownership, or can we? Is there another way?

The RYA has some very good information on buying a boat. I think it's worth the membership fee just to get their advice. http://www.rya.org.uk/

One key point whether you buy in UK or abroad VAT has been paid on the boat. If not, you may have to pay it when you bring it back.

There's no legal requirement to register a yacht. For definitive information, see the ships register web site http://www.ukshipregister.co.uk/

Good luck!
