Hi. I own a Kingfisher 20+of 1968 vintage "Antares" She is living out in Greece having been sailed there by her first owners in approx 1973.My wife Lesley and I live on her for extended holidays of 4 to 6 weeks at a time. My age is 61 and having owned numerous sailing cruisers of this size in my life I know of no better small cruiser, the kingfisher is very seaworthy stable and stong, this coupled with an interior layout that actually works, makes for a boat that inspires both confidence and safety. The Kingfisher is grossly underated, I can only assume this is because to most people the design is a tad stark and bland (not the appearance of yer average ocean greyhound) tho they do sail exceptionally well with no vices. Anyway enough of my waffling . I am more than happy to offer any advice, also look up The kingfisher owners association website. Very best regards Barry.

You'll love it, fantastic little boat. Tough, easily handled alone, bridge deck keeps the cabin dry in all weather, and the way the designer shoehorned so much into the available space is a work of genius. I've sailed mine in Poole, the Solent, Faversham, and am now moving up to the Colne/Blackwater area, where she will be in her element. You can poke up the smallest creeks or take her out in the open water; this boat does it all.
Enjoy!

Hi Barry,
I've just found this old thread and wondering if you'll still reply to it. I've just bought my first boat and it's a Kingfisher 20 (+ I think) and it's a "project" boat if you know what I mean.
My first and biggets task is that the previous owner has replaced the mast step with a wooden one that appears to just be screwed down! Do you by any chance know any details of the original step and how it was fiited (I'm guessing bolts). It seems that to access the underside of the step I'll need to cut away the fiberglass headling between the wardrobe and heads which I'd rather not do unless it's necessary.
Fingers crossed!
Will

I too just bought a Kingfisher 20+ and it is practically a wreck. Would never have bought it if I hadn't wanted this design. A lot of work to make it seaworthy again. Did you ever find out what is under the mast step? Can you tell me?

My Kingfisher is 1966 and it is in a very good shape. I am going to improve it further. It is a lot of boat for the money including the running cost. It is a tough cruiser and a really fantastic internal design.
Post your email so I could send you pictures showing the oryginal mast step in two or three different kingfishers 20. I am looking for contact with anyone who cut a hole underneath the mast step and photoghraphed what's there. I'd love to remove mast step and put a rope organiser under it to run the roopes to the cockpit.
Also I would love to get in touch with anyone who experimented with or replaced the rudder foil/ rudder stock with a modern 'aerofoil' design, maybe an off-the-shelf one?

Hello everybody! I'm about to get a Kingfisher K20 yacht I think. I won it on eBay then got gazumped by the boatyard owner but now he's changed his mind! Ungazumped! Question is whether a tiny diesel engine can be fitted (I have a BMW D7 available, allegedly OK but evicted from a thirty footer for not going fast enough) If anyone has done a similar job I'd be very grateful to know of any snags or tips. Thanks in advance from Davey.

Best advice is to watch where you drop your anchor as in the West Country the Duchy of Cornwall water bailiffs will demand £5 (the charge has probably now been increased). In the River Exe estuary the sea bed is claimed by Powderham Castle and allegedly the Duke of Devonshire's lawyers discovered ancient deeds some years ago. Allegedly these deeds went back 800 years to the days of bad King John. The lawyers then got the deeds legality confirmed in the High Court. After this happened all the fishermen's moorings were lifted and they were informed that they now had to pay the Duke of Devonshire about £1000 per annum rent if they wanted to put down moorings. Those fishermen's moorings had been in established use for over a hundred years but their rights were quashed at the stroke of a pen. Probably when Oliver Cromwell was in power the squirearchy kept a low profile over mooring fees but now the Feudal System is back and it is alive and well. Incidentally, charging sailors to anchor in tidal waters is said to contravene the International Law of the Sea.

trailer for Kingfisher 20 K20 for sale
This is a dedicated Kingfisher 20 or Kingfisher 21 road trailer, built especially for Kingfishers. The trailer will take any bilge keel sailboat boat of similar dimensions or smaller. Twin axle, no-nonsense, large diameter four wheels with good tyres, sprung axles, easy to service. The trailer has never been dipped in the water. I had the boat craned in and out continuing the previous owners tradition. Has rust spots and needs repainting. Kept in an aircraft hangar and in a garage. Serviced 11 months ago. Used recently. Runs like a dream. Vewing welcome.
