Folkboat for Around Britain

Ok, forgive the stupid landlubber questions.

1) I want to buy a boat to go round the UK coastline, I'm thinking of a folkboat 24' or a snapdragon 23'. Do you think this is suitable?

2) Can you just go into any harbour for the night? Or do you have to register in some way, like a hotel!

3) I've only sailed an Enterprise and Mirror's before as a kid! What qualifications do I need to be allowed to sail round the coastline and what away from any "official" qualifications would you recommend in the way of seamapship training.

4) The boats I'm looking at look cheap enough, between 3-7k, but when it's not in use, how much does it cost to keep at a mooring, fleetword harbour for example, or is there a cost ( yeah right !!!! ).

Thanks in advance for any useful tips and help.

You need to learn to sail.
Go onto the RYA website and look for sail cruising.
Take the Competent Crew course,
then take the theory and practical parts of Day Skipper.

Meanwhile, sail with as many people as you can.
You'll learn as much from the bad skippers as the good ones.

To sail around Britain your seamanship and navigation will both need to be excellent.

When you're ready to go, give me a call and I'll come with you!
I'm a navigation instructor!

Yes, if it's in good condition and well-equipped.

We usually radio the harbour-master as we approach.
He'll make sure that the anchoring or mooring fee is collected.
Or find a sheltered bay.

No-one will stop you going, qualifications or not.
I wouldn't do that trip without Yachtmaster theory and practical.

Yeah right!
There's always a cost.
If you can find moorings for less than £20.00 per foot per annum, go for it!
Go and talk to the harbour-master at Fleetwood.
Don't worry if he seems supercilious and scornful!
