Fire protection for sailing boat cabins

I am a member of a team, in Imperial College London, which is developing a fire protection product based on mist technology for kitchens which is fitted to the sink/tap assembly.

We have been told that this could be of interest to sailing boats too, especially where people cook while travelling long distances, even though most fires start in the engine bay.

We don't have a product for sale, we would just like to ask ownres if it would really be of interest to sail boats, assuming there would be no insurance premium discount.

A brief discription of the features of the product:

- it uses a wirelessly actuated heat alarm to trigger the mist
- a very fine mist is created (similar to a fog or "wet sauna")
- low water and power consumption (aprox 2LPM, 1kW motor, usually for 5min)
- can easily be fitted to existing sink/tap assemblies
- will not damage electrical appliances if activated
- is not directional, the sink can be in a corner and the fire be hidden behind a wall
- it suppresses the fire and removes the lethal fire smoke
- it will probably not reach distant accomodation with narrow doors, in essence it will only protect the kitchen/saloon area.
- it will not be effective in areas with high air drafts (such as larger motorboats)

We would be glad to receive any feedback about this product and feel free to email wmakant@gmail.com if you need more info.
