Fantasie 19

Hi, this is a follow on from "Boat identity". Now I know what I have I would like to get some info on the class. Anyone out there got a "Fantasie 19"? I now have an empty boat which has been neglected and unused for about 6 years. She is however sound, so now I am in the process of total refit and renovation. Any info, pics or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I have a Fantasie 19, mine is very basic inside, it just has cusions. There are no fitted instruments or equipment. I have a hand held GPS which gives me speed and position. I will be refitting before it goes back in in April. What information/pictures would you like?
If you have any ideas that you would like to share then let me know.

I have got a Fantasie 19. Post what you would like to know, or an email address, and I will help you as much as possible..... I too have done a lot fo work to mine over the past couple of years, and am now almost finished and am very proud of what I have done.

Hi Jonathon,
On a seperate note, I have sailed my fantasie a hand full of times last year, and have found it not to sail well into wind. In anything more than a force 3 it will not tack, it just stops in the water and gets blown sideways. I suspect that it has something to do with how the standing rigging is set.
Have you experienced anything like this and how do you go about setting up your rig?

Hi Phil,

I too have only sailed mine a handful of times last season. I have found that she doesn't like too much sea, 3-4ft is plenty, and not too much wind - F5 about top end. I have replaced all the standing and running rigging on mine last winter, and all I did to tune the rig was tension it and the rigger check the tension - I don't bother to play tunes with it when sailing. I agree that she won't sail too well to windward, but then triple/bilge keelers aren't known for sailing close to the wind. I haven't had the problem of bot being able to tack though when the wind picks up, quite the opposite - its in light airs that she may stall. I was quite surprised with mine one evening last summer.... sailing at 3kts SOG to windward against a 2kt spring tide - couldn't believe that she would sail that well, so there is hope!

Hello Fantasie owners - I am preparing for the new season and have decided to investigate the excessive play in the tiller. The bearings on the rudder stock have worn and the stock itself has worn.
I can't get the stock out as it is too long to drop through and I cant get the blade off to push it back up through the tube.
I will have to jack the trailer up to get the stock out but my question is before I do all this is -Does anyone know how to repair this. What is involved?

Have now jacked up trailer to let the stock come out through the bottom. I have looked up through the tube but can't see what I have as bearings?
The stock is notched and the lower bearing needs machining out and bushing. I have read somewhere that bearings can be made with fibreglass resin mixed with graphite. If anyone has any experience of this I would be glad to hear from you.

Hi Jonathan,

Have you fitted nav lights to the top of your mast? I have tried but I have been stumped by the narrow flange on top of the mast. I was intending to place the nav lights on the top of the mast and use the halyard to pull the cabling down the mast. Then drill through the s/board side of the mast near the bottom and run the cable though the coach roof. What do you think?

Hi,

The other problem I am trying to overcome is the replacement of my starboard rubbing strip which appears to have been damaged by the pontoon. The middle section has fallen off but I am unable to remove the aft section. I have found the retaing screws but they wont unscrew all the way out, the screws keep turning but nothing else. Have the threads worn or are they self tapping screws? Either way, how do I get the aft section off without damaging the GRP hull? I've checked the inside of the hull and nothing is visible...

Yeah the masthead is rather small on the Fantasie. I've only got an anchor light fitted at the top, but expect its no different than navigation lights. To get around the lack of space I used a bracket which went over the masthead and down both sides of the mast then fixed on each side. This gave me a larger area to work with for the light etc. As for the remainder of the cabling you described - pretty much how I did it!

As for the screws for the rubbing strake, I'm not sure. Like you say they are screws, but I have got "lumps" inside where it looks like they may pretrude through the grp. As for them turning, I wouldn't be surprised based on how old the boat is and how long they've probably been in there.

Hi,
Hopefully you will have sorted your rubbing strake problem by now but if not.... The rubbing strakes on mine are held on with M4 screws with nuts which are visiable on the inside. If yours are wood screws into blind wood then you will need to dig under the screw head and lever out with a flat screwdriver while turning the head.

Phil,
I sorted my rubbing strake our on the 4th attempt. It really is a 2 person job. I decided to replace the entire strake on both sides as it seemed easier. Used 5mm nut and bolt and mastic to seal. Its watertight but I've spent the weekend sailing so I 've not yet renoved the excess mastic or varnished the wooden strake.
Seen the Web site and I am very impressed, its certainly needed done. How do I upload my boat details and photos for your register?

hi I also had this problem and beached her to investigate and would probably have tried to strip down the entire tiller stock if it wernt for my friend Ray an old boathand who suggested taking the stainless steel bolt out yust below the back of the tiller which bolts on to the main rudder shaft redrilling it with just a smaller diameter drillbit so as not to damage the threads thus penatrating the main stock shaft 3 or 4 mil' and replacing the old bolt with a new one just that little bit bigger with a tappered edge,problem solved.in ten minutes.great stuff
