eleven plus sailing dinghy

Has anyone heard of this class of boat. GRP with wooden spars and plenty of built in bouyancy. With a mast as long as it has it looks like it might be called into action! This one is No. 628 so someone must have knowledge of this class(built in Derbyshire) and yet google is remarkably silent on the subject. Is this the last example of it's ilk? Looks good, would like to buy but also would like to know a little about it before hand.
Thanks

So I am not alone! I have had a sailing dinghy for years that I have just got round to putting on the water, and apart from the insignia 11+ on the sail I had no idea of the class. As you say not a lot on Google, but I traced it through the sail makers. Mine is wooden with sail no. 546. They were designed in 1956 by Eric Parlain and are similar to the Gull.
My first sail showed her to be stable and easy to handle

Thanks for that but sadly I dithered too long and it went. Do you sail it on a river of reservoir/lake as I was intrigued as to why it had such a tall mast. I should have just bought it and made the enquiries afterwards. Wonder how many of them still exist.

Took mine out on the river yesterday. She is very rsponsive in light winds. Can take two adults or easy to sail single handed - mast moves forward and just use the main.
Built in side buoyancy looks a pig to repair if timber rots, which might explain why ythere doesn't appear to be many still around. Mine has no sign of decay though and seems original which is good for 60 + years

Glad that you are enjoying it! Only even more miffed now that I didn't buy it whilst it was for sail. Do you sail on an inland lake or the coast/river? Some nice weather at the moment over here in east Anglia. Don't know where you are but hope the weather is good there, as well.

Sorry, you did say river! I'm going bonkers here waiting for Dell tech support. What river do you sail on. We sail on the Deben which is a rather attractive waterway.

I have one- and you can have it for a reasoable donation to the RNLI- with a trailer thrown in-you would need to collect from near wrexham north wales-I have not time to maintain it and it is a pity top let it fall apart if you would be able to restore it and cherish it- it's painted orange and white and the transom is a little weak at the top- sails are a bit sad- I sometimes use the rig on my seafly when on the river in chester as the shorter mast gives tree clearance.
I learnt to sail in it- do not know how really! Eleven plus because it was in theory eleven feet and one inch, and was possible to put on car roof but not a modern car because roof is much thinner! Please introduce yourself and your interest in this boat

We have recently acquired No.507 but have also found very little information available. We hope to restore her over the winter and take her out next summer.

Sounds good but Wrexham is a bit of a way from Felixstowe but maybe, if someone else hasn't gobbled it up, may come that way in the ancient camper van, next year. I am sure someone closer will snap it up as they seem to be a good little boat. Thanks

Hi
My father designed the Eleven plus. His name was Eric Parkin not Parlain. The boat was designed for my brother when he was 11 and was half an inch over 11ft.

At the time my father ran Kitboats as a part of ESA (a firm making educational equipment) and the boat was sold in kit form which could be built at home without stocks or moulds- the roll down decking being preformed.

Somewhere I have some of the original documents about the boats and if you would like to contact me on salemoore@googlemail.com I will try to let you have some more information.

Good to here that some of the boats are still going strong.

My father bought an 11+ in kit form in 1958 (ish) unfotrtunately didnt quite get round to finish it.

The hull sits at the bottom of my garden looking quite sad.

I would happly give it to any one keen enough to finish it and get it in the water, I have the plans available.

It will need somone dedicated as there is alot of work. Photographs available

I have e mailed you separately from Wrexham- just to add I would reckon that you could sail my old 11 plus with less than 16 hours work, obviosly using a reasonably safe sailing area until you get used to her

I've got an Eleven Plus - sail number 15 so an early example. It's in good condition with all its bits and I've got someone interested in buying it. Any clues as to its value?

11+ no 15 was sold in kit form with cotton sails in 1958
Her original owner was Mr E. H. Smart of Rochester, Kent.

Hi bodger. Just read your reference to 11+ 628. I commisioned the boat from Dobsons of Shardlow in 1968 and owned her for 25 years. Sailed her mainly inland but also at Torbay, Fowey and Salcombe. I think you missed the chance of owning a very fine sailboat!! Do you know who bought her and where she's located now?

Greetings from Durban, South Africa.

I also have a Plus, sail number 28+. I bought it from a guy 1 year ago is a bad condition and renovated it to sailing condition.

I firstly battled to find out what type of boat that was, and luckely one of the older guys at the club identified it for me.

I notice the comments from the forum refers to the boats being build in plywood, although mine is GRP / fibreglass.

Please send me a photo / information of what the hull/ boat looks like so that I can be sure that my boat is a plus.

Note that I was only able to trace 2x boats in durban so far, so the class seems to be getting less. This is sad.

Most intersting information found on this website, thanks.

Thanks Sally.

I assumed that the fibre boats may have come later.

I am looking forward to hear from you again about the additional info.

I also intend to corespond to SAILING magazine (old SA Sailing) about the Plus and it's history in order to find out if there are any more active Plus sailors in SA. This should be intersting and will share all info that I get my hands on.

Will continue to view the site.

I know that amongst the papers about the boats I have a copy of the brochure for the Fibreglass Plus which was built after my father had stopped working for Kitboats who provided the kits and fully built ply Eleven plus. I think the fibreglass version was made by a firm called Dobsons or Dobson Marine. I don't know if they still exist.

I guess this forum has gone a little cold but just in case some still look, here goes.
Back around 1960-2 my step mother owned an 11+ bourght for her by my Dad as he had a Flying Dutchman and I had an Enterprise.
She could sail but did not use it much. There were several 11+'s in the club at that time, the Maylandsea Bay Y C, and the club agreed to hold a National Championship I think the first.
My stepmum had me helm and she crewed. We won all the races that weekend including a single handed race, which formed part of the championship.
Happy to sort out more if anyone is interested,
Kindest regards to all John Stevens

I will look to see if I have anything about the pin. I remember the centreboard had a notch so that it could be lifted out rather than just pivoted.

My goodness - the names I can find on the web. I used to sail at Maylandsea Bay with the Stevens family - if John is reading this - hello. My Dad was Treasurer of MBYC but we had a Fleetwind - there was always great rivalry between the Fleetwind and the 11+. I crewed the FD with John Stevens father for two summers - it nearly tore my hands off - but a great experience. David and Paul Stevens were great rivals in all sorts of boats - especially later in the Flying Junior.
I am currently involved in putting together a narrative story for the National Maritime Museum about "my life with dinghies" for an event next summer. I sailed an 11+ with a doctor friend of my Dad's - it was great fun and very lively.
If there are any photos available of the early 1960's 11+ or Fleetwind racing, then the NMM would love to use them.....my e-mail is jfkyachts@btinternet.com
Amazing.

I used to sail 11+, no. 117, off Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey back in the '60s. Great little dinghy, greatly undervalued. Could knock the pants off a Mirror. Loved it dearly and would love to know if it's still around. Is there one for sale?

currently looking at rebuilding my one which was originally built by my grandfather as got rather neglected after it got pushed ove ron its trailer and holed. main question is weather the hull sheets are made from one length of ply or two as can see a differnce between the foward and aft sections but cant see how they are joined. also does anyone know how hard it is to reform the curves without a large steamer.

Hi All,

I have sail number 248 in Chester sailing club, I bought it for my daughter who is now 26. It spent about ten years winched to the rafters in the garage. It looks all original but has a couple of fibreglass patches. It goes well for its age,I guess from this thread it is about, 1965 and still giving pleasure on the water,
