Old Gasoline - How to Handle?

I have been given access to an old (1991) Rinker 235 Fiesta Vee. It has not been run since 2001, and still has about 3/4 tank of gasoline from that time period in the tank. I have tried to syphon it out, but all the tank top connections have anti-syphon devices installed, so I can't do it that way. I did fire-up the engine briefly and it seemed to run OK. Can I just top off the gas tank and run it that way, or will I risk damage to the engine? I have been told that I will gunk everything up by one guy, and another says there will probably be no probelm.

Put in a water scavenger like methanol, a bottle of Gumout or similar gum treatment, then top off with Hi Test to make up for the loss in octane from age. If it still knocks, you can add some octane booster from the auto parts store.
