Looking to buy a boat, but a little help please?

Hi

Sorry for the total "newbie" question, but my other half and I are buying a boat but have little knowledge of what we are doing! we normally just have a little boat that we throw off the sea wall and go fishing on but we fancy some thing a little more substantial now...

We are looking at an 18 ft fishing boat, with a little cabin, I was wondering how far we would be able to take it??? we live in Essex, but was wondering if we could go places such as...portsmouth, clacton, or maybe even devon??

do you think this would be possible? if not, what sort of boat or size should we be considering?
