Is this the MOST stupid idea ever?
Often in life you daydream, and most people never take it any further, but *occasionally* people do. Recently my finance and I decided (knowing absolutely nothing about boats apart from they're cool and we love them!) that it would be a good idea to buy a really nice, big, powerful motor boat in Australia and bring it back to the UK over a prolonged period. Please, I'm not mental, stay with me for a second!!!

Now, we realise that there are dangerous stretches of water and the open ocean can be harsh and unpredictable. We've also discovered that most motor boats only have a range of about 200 miles (although catamarans can be up to 1000). There are I'm sure problems with docking in some countries and I'm sure it wouldn't all be as jolly as it sounds, but, as you clearly know more about boating that we do, are we being totally ridiculous? Are you laughing as you read this? Or, assuming we had some very intense "training", would it be possible?

Any advice or criticism gratefully received!! Cheers.

My advice, if you are stuck on the idea, is to discuss the situation and route with an established yacht delivery company or captain. They could tell you the ins and outs of the route, where it's best to tie up, refuel, where you'll need to call in to, etc, etc. Possible you could get a complete sail plan made up for you?

They would also be able to advise the potential electronics you may require, advise about additional fuel (fuel bladders or the likes) and so many other factors.

It wouldn't hurt to get some kind of training in navigation, running the boat, radio license, etc.

Also, depending on the size of boat, you could hire a captain to run it for you while you sat back and enjoyed the trip.

It would be pretty expensive with twin marine diesels. You could hug the coast all the way up to Horn Island and then cross to PNG. You can then island hop through Indonesia to Singapore. You then hug the coast again all the way to the Strait of Hormuz, and from there you can go round to the Suez Canal. I am sure you know the way from the Med. Your chief problem is security - lots of pirates in Indonesian waters, and also off the Arabian Coast too. The Burmese and Iranians may not let you navigate along their coasts, which would force you to do an ocean crossing. That would be dangerous in a motor launch.
