40hp outboard on Fletcher 14

After a disaster last summer with my 80hp ouboard, I've recently had fitted a 40hp outboard which I havn't used yet. Question is, will this smaller outboard get the boat on the plane? I'm not too fussed about towing skiers as my aging back is now troubling me but will the boat plane with 3 or 4 people onboard?

First thing, how is the hull, do you have a V-hull?? or a flat hull??
If the three persons sit in front will also help.
You also can install wings for the engine, on the lower unit.

Thanks for your reply. It does already have fins on it. Not sure about hull although I believe it's a hull that's made for choppy seas (not calm lakes) so maybe that makes it a v hull.

What is the weight of the boat??
If the boat is too havy it will give also a problem.
Do you have trim taps on both side???

Not sure of the official weight although everyone comments on how light it is.
Not sure on the spec of the new engine as it's been fitted in my absence and I havn't had a chance to drive down and see it yet. It does have hydrofoil fins on it to help lift. Pic of the boat below below with the old engine. The old engine got it on the plane at about half revs.

That'll be trim tabs. They're used to adjust the pitch of the boat.

Dear Sir.
Do you have a pic of the new engine??
Maybe I can see if it works.
Because this engine look so big on the boat.
So a change from 80 Hp to 40 Hp is alot.
But it will push the boat, but not fast.

Best

No, I havn't even seen the new engine yet but I know it's a lot newer and more modern than the old one and it has power trim and tilt.

I'm not too worried about how fast it goes as long as it gets on the plane. The 80hp engine did about 35 knots.

So, I think it will work.
It will not even push the bow up.
So , it will not need to plane.
Please test it first and than you can be sure if it works or not.

Best

The 40hp will get this boat on to the plane depending on how many people are in the boat. With a fully loaded boat it should still plane, especially with the wings on engine but as the weight increases the time taken to get on to the plane will increase however planing should not be a problem for your 40hp

This engine is probably a bit marginal, it should plane one up but may struggle with more weight, get the passengers forward if you can at least until she gets up. Fletchers are fairly deep vee hulls thats why they ride so well at sea.
