Hi,
I have just bought a Driver 440 Sport, as it was second hand, and it looked quite interesting for a first boat on my budget.

Are there any other Driver boat owners or anyone that has any more info on the Driver boat company, because I cant find anything on the web, and it would be nice to find out some history of the manufacturer.

thanks,

Ludachris

thank you for your response, unfortunately you found my post slightly too late :( I had the boat completely kitted out with everything needed, and decided that after a few months to move to a bigger, more well known boat which is generally easier to find parts for and to use which is a 1998 Bayliner 175. I feel a bit of a traitor for not sticking with the Driver but its just easier for my lifestyle.
Thanks for taking the time to reply, and should you find a fellow owner I would love to hear about anything you find. I am in Birmingham, How far away from the sea can you get?

driver boats were built by doug driver, i think they were based in wales, they were designed by ray stapley who used to build cats for racing which were very successfull in there time. i used to own a driver 18.6 with a 175 merc which was avery good sea boat, they are well made boats, sadly ray passed away, but one of his race boats can be seen at the powerboat museum in essex. hope this helps

Hi Chris
I have just brought a Driver 500 with a 125 Force engine on the back.
Looking through the net I see this forum which has managed to answer a few questions about where it was built.
I take it you still have yours, whats it go like, do you ski from it or just cruise.

Hi

I used to have a Driver 500, which was an excellent boat. Great for skiiing and generally playing. The company was based in Dorset and went out of business I believe some time in the early 90's. The 500 is 17 feet and the 440 is slightly shorther, otherwise they are very similar.

driver boats were made in cardiff by doug driver the reson i know this is because my dad drove a driver 560 for a good few years in waterski racing he drove for one of the staff then doug moved to london where he became the jobe agent

HI

I'm from Malta, i own a Diver 500 for 3 years now & for the the rough water we have in the meditereanian sea it's an excelent boat. I have rebuilt it from top to botttom and got it as new. The best thing i like in this boat is it's V shaped hull which gives it a certain stability in the sea. I had certain opportunities to race here with local boats with same power but i had nearly always the win. I always asked where was this boat manufactured and some guys here gave me the answer. If you would like to contact me pls do not hasitate on merit@onvol.net so we can share our interest

Hi

It is good to hear from other driver owners as I have just aquired one in reasonable condition i think it may be a 440 (15') quite a wide beam must be 6' 5". It has a 75HP Mariner fitted. The boat has not been in the water yet. I hope to get it in soon to give it a try. I really like the shape.

I live in Saltash Cornwall. The boat came with a deal on some engines and bits and pieces. Didn't really want it as I have a 17' foot Bontwitco Fast Fisher. However its in pretty good condition and the longer it sits on my drive the more I want to keep it. It has a black trim around the hull about 12" wide and looks like a reasonable job.

Thanks for the interest.

Sorry didn't say it came from a local guy but he only had it a few months never put it in the water. Quite alot of that goes on here. He picked it up somewhere in Cornwall.

Thanks for that, it definitely hasn't been sold on nor moved down the country because I saw it a few weeks or so ago in the yard - and having just checked the broker page like I meant to and forgot, it's 70hp instead of 75 - doh!

http://www.seamark-marine.co.uk/brokeragepages/159_driver440.htm

Nice little boat, always wanted to have a go in it but unfortunately the chance never arose before the bayliner came along - oh well, that;s just how boats work i suppose :-)

Hi
I have just bought a Driver 500 with a Yamaha 70, was told it was a 1999, but after reading this forum I realise that is not possible. The engine has been dated by Yamaha as a 1984. Does anybody know how I can find the date of the boat or any info on the Driver boats.

Hope someone can help

Regards Dave.

Hi guys,

I cannot beleive I've finally found some other people asking the same questions as me.
I bought a Driver 440 last April and started doing it up last year.
I've attached a link to my gallery with the pics.
Its only got a 40hp outboard at the moment, the boat deserves so much more !!

The thing I'm a little stuck with are the front seats.
I really fancy putting some buckets in but I am quite restricted on the width, there's about 35" to play with. The only suitable seats I can find are corbeau ones but I'm a bit reluctant to pay those prices!
Does any one have any suggestions?

Thanks

Ah! that makes more sense of the 440 I've just bought down in Cornwall. I've seen some Drivers that have an impression on the transom eg DD500-061, I guess refering to a Driver 500 boat number 61 but I was confused that mine didn't have that but instead a small silver plate with Wave Rider Sports Boats, England on it giving max. engine size, boat weight, number of persons and boat number. I guess that means I've got a later boat!! Anybody know any more about them?? I've been told that they are a tough little boat that were used for some offshore racing, how true this is I'm not sure!

Would be nice to try and get together as register of where all these boats are now. Somewhere to piece together all the little bits of info that's out there about them. Anybody good with Forums/bulletin boards? www.driverboats.co.uk/forum That's what we need!!!

Anybody down here in Cornwall?? I'm near Truro!
I know of 2 others round here, one that I'm probably going to buy as it's in much better condition than mine and a Driver 500 thats just been painted yellow and it sat outside a boatbuilders about 20 miles up the A30 from here.

I just found this, Things seem to be linking to this being the company that ended up with the moulds but sadly it sounds like they lost them in a fire in the 90's. May be trim available though!!

hi, you are correct they were used for ski racing, iused to own a driver 560 with a tuned up 175 merc, the boat belonged to facom tools it was there race boat, they were originally built by ray stapeley, he had the mould for a 21ft but it never happened and sadly he passed away about 4 yrs ago. it was a very good sea boat and well built. I am now down to a kayak but at least nothing goes wrong after the winter lay -up !! good luck with your boat. barry

Who's good at websites then?? Somebody must be able to set up a basic forum for DriverBoats.com!!

Ive currently started to strip the interior away but struggling finding places for little bits like the windscreen strip at the top, and decents upholsters to recover the fabric did you get yours done by a company.

Dave. I live in Saltash and have had a Driver 440 on my drive for the last year. It has come into my ownership by accident part of a deal on an engine from my fast fisher. It was supposed to be a quick turnaround. Anyway I have not put her in the water yet and plan to this summer. The Driver is a nice looking boat with very classic lines. I intend to sell her but just can't let her go until I try her out. What I do like is the wide beam. The engine is a 75 Mariner. Does anybody know what the boat is rated up to?

The first Driver 440 I had, a later boat built by Waverider sports boats had a plate on the back rating it upto 75Hp. The older better condition 440 I have now also has a Mariner 75 on the back so I guess thats about as big as you'd want to go!! everybody tells me it's going to go like a rocket but I've yet to find out! Still tarting her up!

I got a driver 560 a few months ago which had been sitting in a shed for probably a decade.
The guy that had it said he had used it but i doubt that very much.
He thought it was a dateline and sold it for very little but its half way through a complete rebuild at the moment and it hasnt been cheap.
Its second test run was on a rough sea and it was incredible at cutting through waves (great fun but very wet)

Hi there
I seem to be at least 2 years out of date with answering your questions. Doug Driver approached Ray Stapley with a view to taking his boats to a higher level. Glass fibre. At that time Ray was buying Chris Tremlett hulls without transoms and turning them into really competitive race boats. His ability to recognise which way was up and what made boats fast or slow was second to none. He pulled the flexible hull without transom in so far it seemed impossible that this pointed hull wouldn't just sink into the ocean. To counter this he quickly designed a spray rail. A series of simplistic steps that lifted the boat out of the water as it gained speed and it worked. I drove Ray and his son Jon and his boat builder Dave to Wales where Ray did the deal and we sped back up the M4 with dreams of Millions for Ray. Sadly this wasn't to be. Ray as far as I know didn't gain much so he turned to developing cats. I was the lucky bloke to order his first twin cat. I asked him to drive it for the first time and it wasn't pleasant. Force 7-8 with boats actually being beached rather than carry on. Ray , who was a Red Beret at Arnhem ( a bridge too far) carried on. I in my first encounter with the elements quickly noticed Ray wounds with blood gushing down his face and it welded me into a different person!
He was not just a brilliant boat builder but a bloke well worth to knowing!

Hi Guys, Glad to see all Driver enthusiasts are gathered all here. As already proposed, I suggest some kind of website were we can share pictures of our drivers. I live in Malta Europe with a population of only 400'000 people and I never met any body that has a driver here. Here the sea is quite rough all-round, average force 4 -5 but these boats handle GREAT

Morning All
Just bought a Driver 500 which is in lovely condition, just need to set her up with an engine - I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice? I've been told that around 100hp will give me a pretty quick boat, can anyone tell me an ideal set up that will give strong, manageable performance? Been offered a 115hp longshaft in good fettle, would that be suitable?
Has anyone taken up the idea of a Driver Owners Website? Looks like a great idea, somewhere for us to swap ideas and advice = has it happened, or are there any plans for it to happen?

Ray always told me that the shot you remember of him in Pa Rug at least 10 foot above the ocean was taken in the Isle of Man, not the Channel Islands.
He coupled his memories of this shot with the storey of a tug of war contest with the Manx locals but I can't remember who won. I still have a print somewhere in my collection that I could scan and E'mail if you want?
Ray Stapley is also on the excellent boatmad site through Google if you are interested!

I have just read some more questions being asked regarding these boats and the dates when they were first built. As far as I can remember Ray Stapley built three plugs during 1975-1976 in his workshop at Blackfen Kent. But when he delivered these to Doug Driver, Doug told him that he would finish them off before taking moulds from them. Ray had put his heart and sole into the finished quality of his plugs but Doug was also a perfectionist so it's no wonder they are still so popular!
Also I think Doug Driver may have been involved with Winner boats previous to these boats.

Have a yamaha 140 v4 on mine no problems whatsoever the 500 was only meant to be rated to 115hp apparently but engine is same with different carbs just have to watch the trim at full throttle or it starts to chine hop.

Hi Woodhilldriver
Thank you for that, much appreciated. Is your engine a long shaft motor or standard? Just want to get it set up right from the off. I've heard great things about the Driver 500's stability and handling, can't wait to get her on the water.
Anyone else got any advice on the optimum set up before I do an expensive bit of shopping??!!

put this in google search and you will get some handy sites ( outboard motor setup cavitation plate ) gives you recommended heights or speak to your local outboard mechanic
my cavitation plate sits approx 1-5 to 2 inches up from bung on the transom

Hi Guys
Looking for a bit of advice PLEASE. Just fitting my 140HP V4 Evinrude onto my Driver 500, but it needs a new prop. Read some comments that you need to get the prop choice just right to get it sitting well - has anyone got any advice as to what size and pitch of prop I should start with. Not looking for a massive top speed, but do need to be able to get a skier up quickly. Any advice before I waste a load of money on the wrong prop?
Thanks
Ross

I Raced a Stapley Cat with a pair of 150 Merc's and found it was better to be slightly under propped as it got the boat up quicker from the troughs and top speed is not everything when out on the ocean. So I started with twin bladed 26" left and rights which were a disaster, not enough prop blade and too much boat to lift, then 28" triple bladed Elephant ears which were great at trying for records on Windermere but I found 26" triple bladed Elephants were the answer in the sea. slightly cupped on the outer edge courtesy of Ray Stapley, a big hammer and a tow ball on the back of a Land Rover. I guess you should try a 24" triple to start with in alloy just in case it doesn't work. They run better as surface props. Best of luck!

no mate start with stock prop that will scare you enough first then play normally lower pitch by and inch from stock on that boat but the rest is a black art of trail and error and money that info is for standard props if you want very scary buy a jacking plate for your boat then run surface piearsing prop

A 20 year old that's never been in the water!! I bet there's a few of us that would be interested!!! Would love to see some pictures of it!

Finally got mine on the sea near home down in Falmouth, Cornwall, After many hours of flating and polishing, nice new graphics, cleats and a new screen etc!

I originally bought a much later Driver called 'Wet Dream' made by Waverider sports boats, much more modern interior but then this one came along with a very nice hull but very old engine, lots of swapping around of bits and pieces and I was left with the 'Red Bull' Hopefully the picture comes out, just opened a photobucket account to try and post up a picture!

Anybody else around the Cornwall area?

Dave

Sorry about the size of the picture, it came out a little large!! The process I went through was
1. www.photobucket.com and register for free account make it public
2. Upload a picture of your pride and joy
3. Once uploaded, a list appears on left with things like 'direct link' 'HTML code' etc. I clicked on direct link and it said 'copied'
4. Start your post on here and right click and paste the link into the this box that I'm typing in at the moment
5. Highlight the link so it shows up blue and then click the button at the top that says 'Image'

It should look something like this before highlighting and clicking the Image button, afterwards it adds square brackets and Image to the begining and end of the link.

http://i797.photobucket.com/albums/yy256/averyniceman/Boat/WetDream1.jpg

This link to my photobucket produced the picture below of my first Driver called Wet Dream, it actually says We Dream as the previous owners mum refused to have it on the drive without removing the 't' first! lol

6. finish typing your text and 'post reply'

Hope this helps, sorry if any of it is a bit simplistic! oh, just found you can resize in photobucket aswell.

Dave

Lets get some pictures on here!!!

That's a mighty shiny deck!!! Nice looking boat! Any more pics of the interior? that's the next job for mine, the Red Bull one above, so I'm after ideas to modernise it a little!

Where abouts in the world are you? I spotted the car number plate but can't see where your from?

Dave

We really need a proper website where we can have pictures etc, this thread is going to get seriously long!!

Now that's not a bad idea! My wife set up a group for the SIDC (Subaru Impreza Drivers Club) and having just looked at it I think your right, it'll be ideal for uploading pictures galore, possibly organising a group meeting one day in the future or just getting in touch with others in our area. I've been moaned at for ages to sign up for facebook by the wife and daughter, maybe nows the time!

I've been looking into doing some sort of forum ever since I bought the boat so time to sort it out, Look out facebook, Driver Boats is on it's way!!

Sounds good, I cant believe the followers that there are and the response the forum has had since I put my first post up!! Why doesn't someone start making Drivers again, the design was second to none, all the sports / ski boats about now are heavy american jobs, even fletcher doesn't come come close to a Driver... and Ring well if you want a RIB your ok but a GRP ski boat no way not any more!!!

Jon,

As your probably now aware I have been so keen on this boat that I have set up a 'Driver Boats' group on facebook hoping to bring together like minded owners and enthusiasts.

On the 'Info' page I have collated all the details I could find and put it into a long description. I'd really appreciate if you could have a read of it for me and put right the mistakes I've made and add as much other detail that you can, anything else you consider would be of interest, dates different boats were made, how many, where they were built etc! Lots of the details have come from posts on this thread with much of it coming from Roger who I believe you know.

Those of us who own your boats love them and I hope we will get a good following on this new group. To have you on board would be a real bonus. I understand if you would rather not join facebook but if you would be so kind as to fill in many of the blanks in this boats history I'm sure many would be extreamly gratefull to you, who knows we may even get you some new orders!!

I have the info in word document if you don't want to go on facebook, I will happily email if you could give me a mail address to send it to which will obviously remain private if you wish.

I really hope you can help us out

Kind regards
Dave

It should be still there! It was the other day! If you google search driver boats I think it's the 3rd one down. For some reason I struggle to find it when on Facebook on iPhone, it says no results found and I'm also not a member of any groups???? And I set it up so totally confused! I'll have a look later and see if I've missed something! Not huge activity on there but worth having a look!

props are a black art every boat can differ even if same type engine and wieght at princess factory when we prop 42ft twin scew cruisers the same model made 1000s of each one has to be proped individuly and vary between 6 pitch sizes but with small speed boat what are your revs and top speed now and what is your max revs recomend for enginenormally lower pitch prop for pull out off hole 2 skiers better but u lose top end higher pitch prop no pull lower start of faster top speed better economy

I would be well up for a driver owners club down here in the southwest! Im based in Delabole, near Rock

You said 'we' that's got to make you somebody who was very much involved with the design or build of Driver boats??? Maybe you could answer a question that often crops up on the Facebook 'Driver Boats' group? Hull serial numbers and related date of manufacture..... Mine is D440-1901. Do you or anyone you know have a list of what was built and when? Any help would be great to the info page on Facebook. If you'd rather email. Dave@theaavan.com

Many thanks, Dave

Hi

I'm about to buy a Driver 510 boat all going well I am new to boating and was wondering is it still easy to get parts etc as they seem to be few and far between on the www.

Also is there a way to check age etc easily?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Parts, mmm, not really that I know of. I think its a case of remodel other bits and retrim as you feel. What are you after in the way of parts??

Age........ Now thats a question I'm hoping that another person that has posted on here may answer for us. He (or she) started a post with "We made....." so I'm guessing whoever they are has some in depth knowledge of the boats and will come on again with some details of hull numbers/date of build.

Don't forget to come over to Facebook, search for the Driver Boats group. Only small at the moment but slowly growing!!

Dave

Hi

Thanks for that on the parts front it's a general querie as I've no doubt I'll need something at some point and wanted to know if they are readily avaiable and I'm missing something. I'm assuming the main parts that require replacing over time can be fixed by a good repair yard as I don't want to buy and pay over the odds for parts as they don't make them any more.

Did try the Facebook forum group but couldn't find and have tried the links but couldn't find but will try again.

Thanks for your help.
