Hi, Sorry I do not have any P4s what I do have is a Brand new TA8 - 280 BHP 4235 engine complete with Gear box, starring tube, prop shaft and propeller blade, ex display engine sitting in my showroom just waiting for someone to take it for the right price.
My showroom is in Dubai UAE and we have large stock of spare parts for the following engines:
T8A, TBSC, TASC, in addition to this we also stock spare parts for Johnson bilge pumps, deck wash pumps and all engine driven pumps.

I can't figure out how to send a pm in this forum to reply to anyone advertising Kelvin parts. I need a starter motor bracket for a TSC8: three bolt flange fitting which clamps round the six inch diam. starter motor. I may also be interested in any other parts for this engine. R6 parts also needed and maybe interested in a complete engine and a complete R4.

I have a Kelvin P4R engine with water-cooled gearbox,box is by Newage I think but no I.D. visible. The engine and box seems complete ,starter and alternator etc.

we have 3 kelvin P4,s. one has been completely rebuilt by seaward engineering, it is complete and has original through bulkhead gear wheels ect. another is running but not restored. we also have one for spares.

Any decent engine reconditioner will supply you with a starter ring for your flywheel. Simply split the old one with a sharp chisel and remove it. Put the new one on the ocen until hot, then drop it into place on the flywheel.

Looking at the T4 parts book, the water pump and the bilge pump look to be identical to those fitted on Model K engines. The very top of the linkages looks a little different, but the body etc looks identical

Last year I had the heads on my P4 rebuilt, skimmed and cleaned up. It has behaved perfectly since, but has now developed an intermittent knocking noise. At low speeds you can hear the engine note change, it starts to 'pop' like a valve is not shutting and then (sometimes) an awful knocking noise starts and goes on for unto 20secs. At this point it stops and normally the engine sounds fine again- or there can be a few bouts of this. It seems worse when the engine revs are changed.
My thoughts are a broken or weak valve spring, perhaps with reduced clearance due to the head being skimmed - the top of the piston is knocking the valve back up. Has anyone got ant thoughts on this theory - or can anyone suggest an alternative for the intermittent knocking.

90% of the Model P engines when stripped for rebuild, will have broken INNER valve springs.
My suggestion is that the valve is sticking partly open due to carbon build up on the valve stem/weak valve spring.

All the valve springs were OK (but have now been changed anyway) - the problem was sticking exhaust valves and my mechanic tells me that the valve guides were really coked up. This is a strange one as the engine had probably run for only 50 hours. At the time of the head rebuild the injectors were reset. Opinions in the yard seem to vary - my mechanic reckons it could be a lack of oil lubrication caused by wear in the rocker shafts, whilst other opinions seem to suggest over oiling (ie the opposite), injector problems and pump timing. I'm told that when heads are rebuilt, they sometimes run a tool through the guides that ridges them and may have made them a bit tight. I think I should mention that like lots of P4s, the engine is very smoky (blue/grey) and apparently always has been!
I'm really concerned that this is just going to happen again.
Any ideas would be very welcome

My suspicion would be slightly too much oil passing up the bores, (did you fit new rings and were the bores glaze busted??).
Also slighlty late injection timing that results in some of the fuel being only partially burnt; leaving deposits on the valve stems.

Thanks for your reply once again.

The overahaul was only top end - pistons and bores are untouched.

You may be onto something with regard to timing - when the injectors were reset, they were initially set to 180atms and the engine ran very badly. A chance remark in the diesel injection workshop told us that the crack off pressure had previously been set to around 90atms. The prevailing wisdom was that by increasing them to 180 atms had effectively retarded the engine. They were reset to 125 and all seemed well. Perhaps we should have stuck to the recommended pressure of 180 and altered the pump timing. It could be that the timing is retarded. Nobody seems to know how easy it is to time a BPE fuel pump as fitted to the P series - would you know how it's done?

The parts book and hand book will give the method.
Basically the pump is held to the crankcase with slotted holes. Slacken and rotate pump. Re tighten the bolts.
