Salt water

this may have been discussed several times, but am new to this forum. I am considering getting a small sport boat, 17' with a 3 liter Mercruiser.

Was told by one dealer that if I am using it in salt water I should take it out of the river and flush the cooling system with fresh water after each use. Either that or put a closed loop heat exchanger unit in for about $3,000.

Next one told me as long as I leave it in the river and flush it when I haul it out after a few weeks or seasons use it should be fine.

What's the scoop here. My only real boating experience is with a self(me) propelled plastic thingy.
Thanks for any comments
