Well I´ve taken a few off but not had one stuck like that so I´m suspecting something is still attached. Perhaps a row of bolt heads you have not noticed?

When you are sure everything is as it should be you will not be using the old head gasket again so put a big screwdriver between the edge of the head and the block on one corner and hammer in. Stay on a corner and you should be right.Usually one corner or another is recessed slightly to facilitate this. Take reasonable care as the cast iron can crack with a 5 lb hammer say.

The screwdriver will go in but should not go in more than say 1/2 ¨ then use it as a lever . If it does not come then something is very wrong
