Has anyone used a water filter on their boat's water system?

Any tips?

I prefer to filter the water at the marina before I put it in the freshwater tank.

I use Camco's CX90 filter. It's very good at filtering, but it's high maintenance and I get through a few of them!

Friends of mine use a salt pellet-based softener on the dock. (it's about the size and shape of a gas grill propane tank) It's impressive, but the $600 price tag is enough to keep me battling the Camco unit for a while longer.

I have used the Jabsco screw in water filters for the last few years - fit a new one each Spring - add steretab steriliser to water tank each time I fill up - and can't taste it at all, water is sweet.

Hi - I designed a dual stage filter system that is made for the feed water on boats. It is a complete system that suctions onto the back of your boat and filters the water between your feed water system and the inlet to your boat. It can also be used to fill your holding tank. If you are still looking for a system, please feel free to email me and I'll send you all the facts and pictures. Thanks

I have read with interest your comments re Jabasco water filters and note you believe you have acheived some success. I am seeking a soloution to a similar problem where I wish to remove the high calcium content found in the fresh water supplies in and around the Balerics, or more specifically, Mallorca. In the past three years I have replaced the heating element in the onboard immersion heater, 3 times due to calcium build up, to say nothing of the regular cleaning of taps and shower heads.
I am not looking to change water into wine here !! or even to make it drinkable, I just want to soften it and make it taste a little better when brushing ones teeth or washing vegitables or making ice cuces for drinks etc.

I have bought a boat which will run on the european inland waterways. I am seeking a way to filter the water we take on so we can use it as drinking water from a tap.

Do you know a system that would achieve this?

We use a Canadian made product called Water80 on our boat. We were surprised at the difference in taste we got, even from water that had been sitting in our tanks for God knows how long. The Water80 system is distributed by MKI in Burnaby BC, 604-205-5232, and they are just introducing a stainless steel unit.

Your question was from a while ago but the answer is yes. The unit I was talking about will remove bacteria and particulates down to .1 micron. It is pricey but it also produces pH corrected, non acidic water - a real plus.

Hi Peter,

We are a Canadian company and we manufacture water filters under the brand name Water80. Our generators are highly effective (up to 0.1 micron) and are effective for bacteria and viruses. Because of out patent pending technology our water filters produce water that is pH corrected at alkaline rates of between 8.0 and 8.5 which is ideal for human consumption.
You may look at the product at Water80.ca. The model number is U-820.
You may get in touch with me at writekeep@telus.net My name is Doug Matheson, Managing Director, MKI, Burnaby, BC, Canada
We feel we can help you with your clean water needs, and thank you for posting your inquiry.
