Boat wont start

Do you troubleshoot and repair boat electrical systems?

Here's my problem.

Last year while idleing around the lake I noticed that the motor was getting hot. When I would rev it up it would cool down. Once, when it was hot, my son turned the key off, we smelled an electrical smell, then it would not start. No turning over, no click, nothing. The battery is fine.
