Description
FAIREY Fairey Huntsman
Description
An opportunity to own a piece of power boating history. Refurbished to a very good standard and in regular use, Double Century now turns heads as she did before.
SpecificationsHistory
Double Century was built in 1971 at Fairey Marine of hot moulded agba ply with the upgraded racing hull with extra laminates (thicker hull) and reinforced engine bearers and stringers.
The boat was modified for racing by the first owner who imported Double Century sherry hence the name. The engines were up-rated and the boat lightened. She had an illustrious racing career as reported on the Fairey Owners Club web site with a class win and 5th overall in the 1972 London to Monte Carlo race and at one time led the Mediterranean Power Boat Championship. After its racing career, the boat was decommissioned from racing and modified back to a more standard trim inclusive of detuning and rebuilding the engines.
She is believed to have had 5 owners one of which was the mechanic on the London to Monte Carlo race and who still maintains the engines today. The Ray Hunt / Alan Burnard deep vee hard chine hull form is renowned for its sea kindly properties and its ability to maintain speed in poor conditions. Double Century has achieved speeds of 33 knots with the present ownership and cruises comfortably at 24 knots at around 2100rpm for an economical 0.6gal/mile.
She is presented in her original race-livery with her allocated race number 200 on the hull.
General overview
She was purchased, in a largely original state, by her present owners in January 2007. It was decided, in deference to her unique pedigree, to retain her originality where possible during the extensive refit by a Fairey trained shipwright largely carried out over 2007/8.
For practical and safety reasons a revised galley was installed, in traditional Fairey style, incorporating a fridge, ss sink and full oven, the heads were upgraded and navigation and communication electronics added in a new retro-design binnacle and in a dedicated panel in the fore-cabin. All of the fore and aft cabin glazing and frames were replaced with Fairey pattern reproductions. The tired and worn cabin bottom-boards were replaced with varnished teak and holly. The teak decking has been restored to original condition and maintained with teak-wonder.
Considerable engineering work was also carried out by the original mechanic-owner to provide for reliable trouble-free regular use. During this period of refit all of the recommendations from the 2007 survey, commissioned when she was purchased, were carried out. Copies of this survey can be made available.
It was decided not to raise Double Century to concourse condition but rather to maintain her to a practical and sustainable, very good condition, for regular use. A new owner could use her as she is or raise her to concourse standard if desired.
The retirement of the present co-owners has given time for a long-cherished wish for long-distance blue-water cruising for which a bigger all-weather boat is needed so sadly Double Century is offered for sale to make this possible.
Mechanical
The twin engines are the original Ford Mermaid turbocharged diesels and are regularly serviced. The engines were rebuilt in previous ownerships and have had much work by the present owners with a new turbocharger, heat exchangers, heat exchanger re-builds etc. The engines are believed to be producing around 220 hp each using low pressure feed pumps. Engine hours are 2000 approx, which is believed to be genuine.
The boat is shaft-driven through the original un-handed gearboxes through 4 bladed bronze propellers. Shaft seal shave been replaced in 2010 with ceramic water seals.
The engines start easily especially when using the fitted sump heaters. Oil pressure is good as is the turbo-boost.
There are 4 bilge pumps , one automatic electric under the fore cabin floor, two electric pumps under the aft cabin floor and a manual pump in the aft cabin with wandering pipe.
