Sails/Rig, Hull & Navs, Mechanical & Loose Gear
Sails & Rigging

Sails by British loft RATSEY-LAPTHORN ( like YANKEE ). Sail area : 3 lower working sails 1200 square ft. + 280 Mule and Genoa total1750 square ft.

Additional staysail not counted. Jib on PROFURL roller furling. Staysail on PROFURL roller furling. Additional oversize 1/2" head stay on which Genoa is shackled. Efficient Mule sail is fastened to main mast’ backstay with sheet via top of mizzen mast.

All sheets come to centre cockpit, inclusive of reefing for SINGLE HANDLING sailing. Double spreaders on main mast.

Chain plates at bulwark for stronger rigging.

All rigging, spares and every component is OVERSIZE for maximum safety and reliability. All standing rigging on main mast is 1/2". Sail plan is spread fore and aft to keep aspect ratio low for more comfortable cruising and better sails efficiency.

Sail-cover over both booms. When masts are lowered they rest on top of both tabernacles, out of the way and 8 ft. above cockpit floor for full headroom. 2 WALDER boom break.

Hull & Under body:

EXCEPTIONALY STRONG!!!

Rounded hull in high tensile CORTEN steel. ( CORTEN is a U.S. Steel patent contain chrome, nickel, molybdenum...making it atmospherically rustproof. This high grade steel is twice as strong as ordinarily used Siemens Martin steel, which is much cheaper and easier to work with. )

Keel sole is 1" thick. Keel sides ( skegg ) are 3/8" thickness. Hull from keel to 1 ft. above waterline is 1/4" and topsides 5mm thickness. Decks are 4mm. Centreboard is a 1 1/2" thick CORTEN steel blade 10 ft long pivoting on a 2" diameter hard S.S. axis and weighting 3000 lbs. Centreboard casing is made of 3/8" CORTEN steel.

All this siding is welded to 3" angle stein frames 16' apart throughout from bow to stern for maximum strength, making SAGESSE the strongest vessel afloat anywhere as far as he know said Dutch top naval architect Mr. van de Meer who came with SAGESSE's designer Mr. W. de VRIES LENTSCH and the press to assist at the launch of the hull by the Dutch yard.

A floating fortress,... stronger than an Icebreaker they said ! And it is. SAGESSE is my fifth boat. I have captained larger sailing yachts, and worked in boatyards. Years of research went in the concept of SAGESSE, amalgamating the best features from yachts of all nationalities belonging to experienced circumnavigators like captain Irving JOHNSON, Eric HISCOCK, Philip JEANTOT, Marcel BARBIAUX, Eric TABARLY, Olivier de KERSAUZON and others. The hydrodynamic lines of SAGESSE, despite the above water comfortable cruising look, give the hull an ease of entry and fluidity in the water that have surprised many when on board, as well as the sea kindness.

All bulkheads are CORTEN stein with continuous weld. Sump at foot of each companionway to act as holding tank for used shower water.

DOUBLE BOTTOM up to 1 ft above the waterline from bow to engine room’s aft bulkhead, with provision to extend it to stern.

Many individual tanks, integral to hull, some as fuel tank, some as water tank, some as floatation tank.

Lead ballast melted in keel. Fairleads build into the bulwark, S.S. lined. 4" wide CORTEN & S.S. rub rail all around ad strength & protection. Weight empty about 30 metric tons.

Electronic & Navigation:

Only basics : American made SEAHAWK VHF. British made SPACEAGE depth sounder and speed-log. American made AIRGUIDE compass. SEAFIX radiocompas. Antenna on mizzen mast for CB. This leave the buyer the convenience to install the latest gadgets of his choice !

Mechanical:

THIS is what really counts, therefore only the very best : 5 cylinder Scottish built GARDNER 5LW, rated world's best, selected by fishing trawlers and barges and finest yachts.

British made 2 1/2 : 1 SELF-CHANGE hydraulic reduction gearbox ( almost equal in weight with the GARDNER engine. 2" diameter special hard S.S. propeller shaft. 3 blades H.D. bronze GAINES propeller by GEORGE SPICER of London, England, with 50% blade area for better efficiency.

Engine day-tank on bulkhead, with level gage; filled by electrical pomp or manual back-up. Well proved efficient self contained closed circuit fresh water engine coolant. Why pump salt water into an engine?

The dry exhaust also prevent from pumping sea water into the boat. It is also extremely silent. These concepts have operated perfectly well on YANKEE since 1960. The exhaust pipe is boxed in a duct from the manifold to the stern, air cooled by 2 fans in engine room.

The warm non combustion fresh air in the duct can be directed into the central heating ducts and cloths dryer for comfort and convenience... why wasn’t it ?

Professional twin fuel filters with switching lever. Gate valves to select fuel tank and trim hull. Trans-Atlantic cruising range under power; an important safety feature. Large compensated rudder for efficient manoeuvring under power.

Loose Gear:

Lifejackets, 4 anchors: 1 CQR, 2 DANFORTH, 1 FISHERMAN. Boathook. White 4" foam cockpit seat cushions. Large cockpit cover over boom in port or over masts when lowered for inland waterways. Sail covers over booms. 2 horseshoe life rings with automatic lights.

This vessel has been built for me at no cost sparing.

Please note that SAGESSE features can only be appreciated by an experienced sea-going sailor.

A recreation yachtsman will not be able to recognise the features, the versatility, the exceptional ruggedness.

Due to poor health the vessel has had very little use. SAGESSE is a U.S. COAST GUARD DOCUMENTED VESSEL.

I therefore would prefer to see her continuing to fly the U.S. ensign.

NO VIEWING WITHOUT PRIOR APPOINTMENT MADE WITH THE OWNER IN PERSON. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTION. Illness force sale at reduced sacrifice price.
