second hand Memory 19 open, keel stepped 1977 Cabin Memory. See below for the history of the Memory 19 This early Memory 19 has had the benefit of a complete renovation in 2002 and is offered ready to sail. She has a traditional layout with side benches, keel stepped mast, retractable bowsprit and outboard on a transom bracket. The Observations from a 2007 professional survey were: "This survey has found “boat” to be a robustly constructed and well finished craft. No serious defects have been found, although the stay with the broken strand should be replaced." All woodwork was replaced in 2002 and is sound, although some is in need of re-varnishing… Douglas fir oiled floor, Iroko seats, coamings, rubbing bands and toe rails. The Centre Board, lifting wire and tackle are in good condition. The rudder gear is sound, but will require new bolt this season. The ballast is fixed sealed shot. Spars – all wood, keel stepped mast, retractable bowsprit with chain bobstay all in very good condition, age unknown. Running rigging, wooden blocks and brass headsail roller furler all new in 2003. The SS standing rigging and chain plates are in good condition (age not known)
History: The Memory 19 is a gaff rigged sloop originally designed some 27 years ago by Tony Robinson RINA for himself and his family. He was inspired by the refined shapes and practicality of the small, shoal draft fishing smacks of Brightlingsea and so the Memory has the ability to dry out on a mooring, run up a beach or onto a trailer, making her ideal for today’s leisure sailor. Since then over 130 Memorys have been built and are now well proven classics in their own right; safe, easily handled yet fast boats with numerous wins to their credit in Old Gaffers’ Association events. In the “open” Memory the accommodation is modest but practical with two full sized berths and some storage in a vee formation in the snug little cabin under the foredeck. The cockpit is large and deep. Cabin versions are also built, which allow for galley, loo etc. without (usually) unduly compromising the cockpit size. The Memory has been fitted out in many different ways over the years; originally sold as a kit boat, the styles and standards of fitout vary considerably. The main question for the second hand buyer is “open” or “cabin”; thereafter it is a matter of personal choice and quality of build and condition. There are very few Memorys left that need total renovation. Prices usually vary from around £7.500 for a boat needing TLC to around £25,000 for a pre-owned Salterns’ built Memory.
