Hamble River Skiff: Salterns Boatbuilders new builds To rediscover the forgotten pleasure of rowing for recreation, one needs a proper purpose designed rowing craft; something that is responsive, stable and easy to row..... such as the Hamble River Skiff. The average 10 to 12 foot dinghy is designed more for an outboard motor than oars and will not do the job at all, being heavy to handle, difficult to propel in a straight line and plain hard work to row any distance. The Water Rat would have approved of the Hamble River Skiff which has roots that go back over 100 years to the Phoenix Boat Company's famous skiffs and has all the elegance of the very best Edwardian pleasure craft. However, in keeping with today's needs, the hull is now made in low maintenance, pre-coloured GRP. This is then fitted out with varnished mahogany seats, gunwales, knees, bottom boards and so on, in the traditional manner.... resulting in a most pleasing looking craft. The standard skiffs have a comfortable passenger bench aft with curly arm rests and can carry a maximum of three adults or two adults and, say, two children. There are other options such as a sliding seat or beautiful Edwardian cane seating. The craft come with built in buoyancy tanks and will meet the new EU requirements for stability etc. as detailed in the Recreational Craft Directive with CE certificate and approval. "there is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats”
