Description

Sparkman and Stephens 57 ft Yawl
BROKERS COMMENTS

CIRCE was born into a period of yachting when the Sparkman & Stephens design office, and the fastidious Rod, Olin?s brother, were ahead of the game and could do no wrong. Winner of the 1951 Fastnet Race and Class winner in the 1954 Bermuda Race, CIRCE and her S&S sisters were fast, beautiful and very seaworthy. This yacht has enjoyed a recent rebuild which has put her in fine structural and cosmetic condition ? iconic S&S !

CONSTRUCTION

Wineglass bottom, long keel and full transom of carvel mahogany and teak planks over bent 2 x 2 inch frames; 3 laminates at 10 inch centres. Bronze fastenings. Stainless steel floors, bronze in forepeak. Teak plank deck over tongue and groove cedar planks.

ACCOMMODATION AND DOMESTIC EQUIPMENT

Presently the accommodation is arranged for 4 people in 2 main cabins. There is however considerable space in the fore cabin, currently with a workbench, enough to fit 2 pipe cots or with some minor adjustment; vee berths. It should be noted that the interior layout does differ from the original plan, principally by re positioning the head from starboard by the chart table to port for?ard the mast.

Overall the stylish varnished mahogany and teak furniture contrast with white deck head and sides, which with ample ports, lights, deck prisms and (original) opening hatches give a very light interior but with the ambience redolent of these yachts.

The cockpit has generous under seat stowage, suitable enough for sails. From the cockpit the sliding hatch over companionway steps lead down to the main saloon with galley immediately to port. Equipment includes a Taylors model 043 gimballed 2 burner hob and oven with sea rails, ice chest and sink with pressure H&C fresh water.

Immediately forward is the settee to port with stowage under and single berth outboard. Access through the bulkhead for?ard and sliding door to port reveals the master suite cabin with double berth and stowage in drawers beneath. Beyond is the full boat width head compartment, with WC to port and shelving outboard and also opposite. There is a shower pan installed but not plumbed. The fore peak, also accessed by ladder and hatch from the fore deck, has work bench and substantial space for sail stowage.

Coming aft through the companionway with skylight above, and past the head section there is a 7 ft long open hanging closet before re entering the saloon cabin, where to starboard is another settee and single berth again outboard and above with stowage below. Further aft is the chart table, navigation space with instruments and electrics panel, opposite the galley.

CIRCE has undergone restoration and refits; notably by Sander and Snedikes Boat Building LLC at Pawcatuck, Connecticut over 15 months from Dec 2000. In 2007 she experienced an interior domestic fire and sold ?as is? to the present owner, who has had her fully repaired and restored to nearly new condition, principally by Driscoll Boat yard, Mission Bay San Diego Ca. and for which details are available.
