Zero Keel

It is named the ZERO keel system “because it has zero bolts and zero risk of falling off the hull. The encapsulated lead bulb also provides a low centre of gravity and a sleek hydrodynamic shape to enhance performance.”

The lead ballast bulb is situated inside the base of a long and robust GRP fin keel that is moulded as an integral part of the hull. The leading edge and the bottom of the keel moulding are further strengthened with an extensive external multiaxial laminate incorporating Kevlar™ reinforcement. This also gives maximum protection against impact while the length and shape of the keel ensure good directional stability and low drag.

Kraken chairman and experienced blue water sailor Dick Beaumont explains...

In summary Kraken Yachts believes that “No blue water yacht should be built without safety being its very first consideration. The Kraken hull and keel are one piece. It is impossible for them to be separated. It is perhaps the ultimate example of Kraken Yachts’ belt and braces attitude towards the requirements for safe blue water sailing.

Hull and deck design

Full skegged rudder to protect the rudder from damage by collision with flotsam and to protect it from grounding.

Centre cockpit with good safe protection fully surrounded by coamings to prevent wave ingress into the cockpit.

Full comfortable helm seat with space for two crew so that hand over of watches is easily facilitated while seated.

Easily accessed transom to facilitate recovery of crew from the sea in man overboard situation.

Sliding zero gravity companionway hatch so that crew can slide it down, go in or out, then slide it up so that a vulnerable companionway entrance can be utilised without risk of water ingress during inclement weather.

Fast access liferaft locker in cockpit floor so that the liferafts, of which there are two, can be handled from the safest area of the yacht outside. It's a much better solution to have two 6 man life rafts on board because one large 10 man is difficult to handle and has no redundancy in the event of failure.

Hydraulic System

The concept is, as we have said, where at all possible, electric motors have been eliminated, since in our view they are the most common source of failure.

The power sources of hydraulic supply are from the PTO ( power take off) on genset 1 as well as three 4kw power packs which run off 24v DC supply.

The sail control systems are all hydraulic, all winches, all furlers,both in boom and dual headsail furlers,main halyard captive winch,the vang,and the back stay adjusters.

The windlass and bow thruster are also hydraulic as are the dingy davit winches, the dive compressor and even the water maker.

Only the bow thruster and the dive compressor require the genset 1 PTO, all other hydraulics can be powered by the DC power packs so there is no need to run the genset while under sail, although any of the hydraulic systems can be run off the genset 1 PTO if required, so again there is comprehensive redundancy built in.
