About this Hallberg Rassy 36

The Hallberg-Rassy 36 was an incredibly popular model enjoying a production run of 14 years which saw over 600 hulls produced and as a direct result the design is now regarded by many as a modern classic. With her high  quality mouldings, teak decks, solid teak toerail and high quality mahogany joinery below decks she certainly feels every bit the classic yacht when compared to many modern mass production designs.

'Timbla of Wight' is a MkI version of the design with the narrower section aft and elegantly raked transom giving a more pleasing line than the beamer MkII version. Having been cruised extensively both in UK waters and on the continent she is well equipped and nicely presented. Fresh from a winter lay-up she is now fully in commission and ready to sail away for the season.

Construction

Constructed in traditional style with hull and deck mouldings of heavy GRP hand laminated construction using isophalic gelcoat and resin for improved water resistance. Hull moulding cored above waterline. Deck and coachroof moulding cored throughout. Hull and deck moulding finished in off white gelcoat with iconic blue Hallberg Rassy style lines. Decks of laid teak. Hull finished in navy antifouling below waterline.

With the large expanse of laid teak decks you could be forgiven for thinking you were on a classic yacht when standing at the helm of the HR36.

A substantial twin bow roller arrangement on the stem allows the anchor to be stowed in the roller, leaving a second roller for use when mooring. The foredeck between the stem and the forward end of the raised coachroof moulding is relatively short and contains the stout mooring cleats, electric windlass and large opening deck hatch and anchor locker hatch.

Passage aft can be made down either port or starboard side decks, both are wide and largely unobstructed. Stout moulded toerails with solid teak caprails run the full length of the decks with substantial secured to stanchions mounted on the caprails All combine with timber grabrails running along the coachroof to make sure crew are safe and secure when moving around on deck. A small area of aft deck sits at the aft end of the coachroof moulding with a large opening hatch into the lazarette locker space located centrally.

The large center cockpit is well recessed below moulded coamings which are part of the coachroof moulding. The recessed sole and seating make this elevated cockpit feel very safe ans secure regardless of the weather conditions. A solid windscreen and robust sprayhood provide the cockpit with excellent weather protection. Seating is in a U formation with the pedestal and wheel centrally located toward the aft end. A deep cockpit locker is accessed under the starboard cockpit seating.

Accommodations

Hallberg Rassy have a reputation for quality and this is well deserved when you consider how fresh the interior of Timbla is after 23 years of service. Finished with all joinery work constructed of solid Mahogany, finished with a satin varnish and velour blue upholstery the living space feels very homely and traditional while practical for a life at sea. The traditional teak and holly soleboards have been protected from new with fully fitted carpets.

The forepeak provides two large single berths in a traditional V-berth layout, an infill is provided to convert the two single berths into a large double bunk. Light streams into the cabin space from the large opening deck hatch. Storage is provided in locker space beneath the bunks, overhead  port and starboard outboard a series of small opening lockers provide storage for personal items with a small hanging locker located on the starboard side aft for larger items.

Located immediately aft of the forepeak the heads compartment on the port side of the boat. Finished in white formica face plywood with satin varnished mahoagny trims the compartment is bright and easily cleaned. Fitted with Jabsco sea toilet, porcelain sink and vanity unit.

A large centrally located drop leaf table dominates the saloon area. Along the port side an L-shaped settee provides seating away from the passageway forward with additional seating in the form of a bench settee along the starboard side. Both settees double up as generously proportioned single berths when required. A huge volume of storage is provided around the saloon with lockers under the bunks, overhead cupboards and cave lockers creating a very useful mix of space.

Partial bulkheads at the aft end of the saloon neatly divide the internal space with the galley and navigation station located aft. The galley is located on the starboard side of the companionway steps aft laid out in a wrap around U configuration, maximising available work space while remaining fully functional while at sea. A practical selection of storage is provided throughout the galley with the space well appointed. Taylors Galley Range gas cooker, twin stainless steel sink, pressurised H&C water faucets, manual sea water faucet, top loading cool box.

To port at the forward end of the passage way through to the aft cabin is the nav-station. Laid out with a navigator forward facing a large chart table provides a great working space with all navigation instrumentation and the ships switch panel easily to hand. Storage for charts and bosuns gear is provided with the chart table while a bookshelf aft of the navigators seat provides storage for pilot books etc. A passage way leading aft runs from the navigation station to the aft cabin, within the passage way a hanging locker is located and access to the engine space.

In the typical Scandinavian style the aft cabin is fitted with a large single bunk to port and a generous double on the starboard side. Again a great selection of storage is provided throughout the cabin, under the bunks and overhead, outboard in a seriuous of lockers with a small hanging locker located at the doorway.
