History of Folkboat

Founded in the late 1940s, Folkboat is one of the oldest and most esteemed boat manufacturers in the world. The company's origins are in Sweden, where a design competition initiated by the Swedish Cruising Club led to the creation of the first Folkboat, remarkably conceptualised by Tord Sundén. The compact, seaworthy, and deceptively simple design of the boat quickly captured hearts and it swiftly became known for its superior functionality, which led to its mass popularity amongst sailors worldwide. Even today, the original Folkboat, often termed as the Nordic Folkboat, continues to be revered by sailing enthusiasts around the globe.

In the late 1960s, the company began producing the Folkboat in fibreglass, given its enhanced strength and lower maintenance costs. These fibreglass variants were called International Folkboats and they were a huge success. While traditional wooden Folkboats are still being produced, the majority of new Folkboats are constructed with fibreglass.

Despite its Swedish roots, Folkboat is now headquartered in Germany. However, the brand maintains a truly international presence, with Folkboats found across Europe, North America, and Australia among other places. Folkboat has admirably evolved over the decades while retaining the timeless appeal of the original design. The company continues to be distinguished for its commitment to quality, innovation, and the uncomplicated yet charming nature of the classic Folkboat design, upholding a legacy that has spanned over seven decades.
